My Beautiful Niece - Anna

The day before Anna was going to be delivered (by a scheduled C-section) her father came home and said, “I think her name should be Anna.” Everyone in the room seemed to instantly nod with approval and then I said, “Hi, my name is Anna and I’m proud to be Class Valedictorian!” And twelve years later, she is right on target for that title…
So in order to understand the person behind this name, let me take you back to when she was in her mother’s belly. It was pretty reminiscent of the movie Alien and that chestburster scene. My sister would scream in pain from her massive blows and kicks. I would watch in horror and I knew this little girl was going to be wild. Many mothers struggle with breast feeding and the “latching on” process, but not with Anna; she was a vacuum right out of the womb and the talk of the nursery. She had powerful, loud cries and these big beautiful brown eyes that never wanted to stay shut. She would keep my sister up all hours of the night, especially when she learned to escape the almighty crib.
I know my sister could share story after story and we all laugh at how unbelievable some really are… but what always stood out to me is Anna’s courage, warm heart and boundless wisdom. As a tiny little thing and barely able to crawl she could light up the entire room. She was full of life and still is. Every single time I walked into the room I was greeted with a warm welcome and a huge hug and it still happens to this day – just maybe not as huge. Even though her teenage years are upon us, her old-soul will guide her exactly where she needs to be. I am certain of that.
I’m so impressed and inspired by her willingness to try new things and be open to new friends and new experiences. Her free and artistic spirit will open many doors and ones that she won’t be afraid to walk though. Confidence always builds with age and I pray she never loses it in herself and continues to recognize and appreciate her talents.
When people say Anna looks like me or acts like me, it truly is a compliment. I'm always trying to teach her to enjoy her life and keep her focus off of boys. Unfortunately that's a tough one, she's a romantic at heart; but she loves her straight A's even more and everyone is grateful for that. Presently, she is writing these really awesome Fanfic stories that I cannot even believe come from her. Her talent does and has always superseded her age. She writes amazing poems and songs and sings with such a sweet angelic tone - it's really hard to believe that one girl could possess so much talent. My wish for her (and all my nieces and nephews) is to always see and value what lives inside of them - ALWAYS!!
I wrote this poem twelve years ago and I wouldn't change a word…
Anna you are an Angel
A gift from your mother’s soul
Anna the Angel
Your insightful eyes glow
Anna the Tender
You are charitable and sweet
Anna the Strong
Will always help the weak
Anna the Angel
Your spirit shines
Anna my Angel
Will be admired beyond time
I love you Anna Lynn!
